ALBUM OF THE MONTH: THE WEEKND - HURRY UP TOMORROW

January 9, 2025

They say good things come in threes, and Hurry Up Tomorrow is no exception. The Weeknd’s latest release wraps up his iconic trilogy that began with After Hours and continued with Dawn FM. This final chapter takes his signature blend of melancholic R&B and cinematic synthwave to even greater emotional depths, leaning into themes of redemption, loss, and self-reflection - all carried by Abel Tesfaye’s unmistakable falsetto.

There’s plenty to unpack on this album. Timeless, a brooding collaboration with Playboi Carti, and Sao Paulo, where Anitta’s sultry vocals meet lush Latin rhythms, are just two of the standout tracks. The album perfects the sound The Weeknd has cultivated over this trilogy - atmospheric and reflective, a soundtrack for late-night introspection.

For vinyl lovers, there’s something extra to look forward to. Hurry Up Tomorrow will be available Via Universal Music as an indie exclusive clear vinyl, complete with another iconic album cover. The album drops on January 24th, so be sure to grab a copy from your favourite local indie record shop!

Celebrate this incredible trilogy and the end of a significant era in music history. Take the time to savour it, we’ve come a long way together.

The Weeknd Pasadena Rose Bowl

The Weeknd’s racked up more billion-streamed tracks than anyone else. Let’s break down some of the hits that have helped him get there:

The Weeknd - Blinding Lights Rview

Blinding Lights (After Hours)

If there’s one song that defines The Weeknd’s career, it’s Blinding Lights. That irresistible synth line feels like it’s straight out of the '80s but somehow still ahead of its time. It’s the kind of song that works anywhere - on the dance floor, in the car, or just stuck in your head for days. No wonder it smashed streaming records and became a global anthem.

THE WEEKND House of balloons review

House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls (House of Balloons)

This is where it all started. House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls is dark, moody, and unapologetically raw. Like stepping into a blurry afterparty you’re not sure you should be at, but you can’t leave, and don’t want to.

The Weeknd Take my Breath Review

Take My Breath (Dawn FM)

Pure disco magic. The beat pulls you in, the synths shimmer, and The Weeknd’s falsetto takes it to another level. It’s smooth, hypnotic, and just the right amount of retro.

The Weeknd - Starboy Review

Starboy (Feat. Daft Punk) (Starboy)

This track is The Weeknd’s ‘I’ve arrived’ moment. Teaming up with Daft Punk, Starboy is sleek, futuristic, and dripping with confidence. The beat’s simple but so effective, and the hook is unforgettable. It’s a flex, but it’s also a peek into the darkside of fame - delivered with style, of course.

The Hills (Beauty Behind the Madness)

The Hills is The Weeknd at his darkest and most honest. That eerie opening, the thunderous bass - it all pulls you into a confession that feels uncomfortably real. It’s raw, it’s vulnerable, and it hits hard, which is probably why fans keep coming back to it.

By now the debate between digital and vinyl DJs as to which format is superior has probably reached a truce. After all, both formats have been around long enough to show that there’s enough space for them to happily coexist. But when it comes to the question of digital or vinyl, what’s still very much true is that DJs have strong preferences. For some, vinyl represents the purest form of the craft—hands-on, tactile, and deeply connected to the roots of DJ culture. Others embrace digital DJing for its flexibility, convenience and creative tools. But beyond the surface differences between vinyl and digital, there are characteristics that can actually wind up shaping a DJ’s coreidentity. From mixing techniques to music discovery, audience perception and performance style, vinyl and digital each impact a DJ’s style in unique ways. Whether you’re weighing up which path to take or simply curious about how they compare, understanding these key differences can highlight what you value when itcomes to DJing and even music in general.
