When my wife and I met in Montreal at a music festival, our first date was record shopping, my first job after school when I was 18 was working in the Beggars Banquet record shop in South Kensington and when that shut down, I managed three different Our Price shops in London before I joined Cocteau Twins in 1983. Before I got that first job, I spent most of my teenage years in Beggars and in Rough Trade in Notting Hill hanging out and buying 7inch records with every spare penny I had. It’s #WorldHistoryDay and we’re celebrating with a slice of record shop history in the UK. Did you know that the oldest record shop in the world is in Cardiff, Wales? @spillersrecords was founded by Henry Spiller and Joe Gregory in 1894 after Spiller and Gregory recognised the steadily increasing interest in recorded music and they made business dealing in both shellac phonographic discs and wax phonographic cylinders, gramophones and, in the 1920’s, musical instruments. Spillers Records has provided music for generations, with music lovers from all over the world walking through their doors. Today, Spillers Records is owned by Ashli Todd and celebrates its 129th year! 🎉

What’s The Story, Morning Glory? Today is #LondonHistoryDay and what better way to celebrate than with a Britpop music fact that may have slipped under your radar... RSD shop @sisterraysoho, established in 1989, is located on London’s Berwick Street, Soho. The location is also infamous for another reason – #Oasis' seminal 1995 ‘What’s the story, Morning Glory?’ In 1995, when the front cover of Oasis’ album was shot, you can see the old record shop, Selectadisc, which would later become Sister Ray. The location was selected due to the various record shops on the street, and Sister Ray would later migrate further down the road, where it has remained to this day. Since their album-feature-fame, Sister Ray has participated in multiple Record Store Days and become a favourite record haunt of many Londoners. This @taylorswift fan travelled a 434-mile round-trip to secure ‘folklore: the long pond studio sessions’ on vinyl. Following a ferry from Shetland to Aberdeen and losing GPS signal, he managed to secure the last copy at @chameleonrecords before heading home. This pure dedication reminds us of just how important records can be to people, and just how important the places that stock those records are to their communities. 🧡
