Tell us a little bit about your store? What's the vibe?
Rarekind Records has been in business for 10 years in central Brighton, we sell new and second hand vinyl, split about 50/50. We specialise in Hip Hop, Reggae, Funk/ Soul and World music, but sell all genres , the more interesting and unusual the better.

Do you remember the first record shop you went to? And you do you remember the first record you bought?
The first record shop I really remember is Rounder Records in Brighton, I bought my first releases on tape from there - pretty certain the very first was Billy Joel - An Innocent Man. My first record came from there too, I got them to order a copy of Cypress Hills first album on vinyl in 1992, it took about 3 weeks to arrive. Ever since then I've always spent a lot of time in record shops and they have undoubtedly played a massive part in deciding the music I listen to , when I was younger the only way to find out about a lot of the stuff I was interested in was to ask at the counter in specialist shops. I've always been into buying second hand records , and there is something I particularly enjoy about walking into a shop / record fair / boot sale and not knowing what music i might come across.

What is your favourite record shop (apart from your own!) and why?
My favourite all time record shops would probably be Mr Bongo's in Soho and Beanos in Croydon... Bongo's because it had incredible stock and was literally the only place you could buy a lot of stuff from at the time , as mentioned above you could rely on their recommendations and visiting there always meant discovering dozens of previously unheard of titles... Beanos because it was massive with great stock - 3 floors of second hand gems to dig through.

Who's the most famous person you've had through your doors? Any funny stories?
There's been a few well know people pass through the shop, especially hip hop types, including some personal heros.. naming them would be name dropping tho!

What's the best gig you've ever been to?
Roots Manuva, Blak Twang & Fallacy at the old Concorde in Brighton

What's your all-time favourite book?
The Outsiders by SE Hinton

What's your all-time favourite film?
The Sting

If you could only listen to 3 songs for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come / Nas - Lifes A Bitch / Buju Banton - Untold Stories

Who would form your all-time Glastonbury line-up? (past & present)
ha impossible! James Brown / Tribe Called Quest / Arethea Franklin / Prince / Sly & The Family Stone / Aesop Rock / Janis Joplin / London Posse / Al Green / Kano / The Rolling Stones . .you could literally go on forever

What's your all-time favourite record?
Nas - Illmatic

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music whose company is not publicly owned.

In other words, we're dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores - not online retailers or large corporations.
