List of official Record Store Day releases revealed

Record number of independent shops to take part in celebrations

28th February, London: Record shops of the UK and beyond are gearing up to deliver the biggest vinyl party of the year on Saturday 13th April.

Hundreds of artists have come together to support independent record shops and create one-off, exclusive vinyl releases especially for Record Store Day. Fans have been waiting in anticipation to see what will feature on 2019’s list.

And you can now view all RSD releases here – with a round-up of highlights listed overleaf.

Artists such as The Rolling Stones, IDLES, Aretha Franklin and Iggy Pop have all produced special records which will only available from participating shops. A number of artists are also offering fans an opportunity to get their hands-on brand-new music including The Flaming Lips, Julien Baker and Courtney Barnett.

Iggy Pop, who also celebrates his birthday on RSD this year, said “In my life, music has been a balm for loneliness.  It was in the cheap ass little record store that I found a way to connect with other people.  I was 18.  It was a theater, a glimpse at the world of commerce, and a cultural library; and my experiences as a teenage clerk were full of humor, and curiously warm.  The modern approach, which is fine, still needs nourishment from this template.  Everywhere on earth I go, there are freaks minding a record store.  It's a good hang - daylight vs. dimly lit, clear eyed vs. stoned, and social vs. savage.  So that's why I like 'em.”

The list of releases is being celebrated at a launch party in London on Thursday as long-time record shop supporters Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes play an intimate set to kick off the RSD countdown.

Speaking of the importance of record stores Frank Carter said “Independent record stores have always been a safe haven for music freaks, fans and aficionados. In an age where the world is turning digital and the very physical nature of product is disappearing into pixels before our very eyes, it has never been a more important time to get out and support the very place that provides more than just a song”.

They provide knowledge, experience, vibe, community and passion in ways that the digital realm can only try to replicate.   While it’s a great thing to have a world of music at your fingertips, it’s a beautiful experience to be surrounded by it, to pick it up, to lose yourself in the artwork and the lyrics and most importantly to talk to other people about why music is important to you. If digital is the future musical religion, then independent record stores will always be the cathedral, and only the purest followers worship at the cathedral.”

Lots more record shops around the country will be keeping their doors open late on the 28th and inviting customers in to take a first look at the list. A full events guide can be found here:  https://recordstoreday.co.uk/events/

More shops taking part than ever before

Independent record shops continue to enjoy a resurgence as 250 are now signed up to take part in this year’s celebrations. That’s the largest number in RSD’s 12-year history.

Ashlie Green, manager of David’s Music in Letchworth said “RSD remains such a special day for all of us independent retailers, big and small. It’s not only an opportunity for new music lovers to come through our door but it’s also a great opportunity to celebrate our favourite music with our loyal customers. There may be testing times ahead for independent retailers which is why events like RSD, which champions bricks and mortar shops all over the country, is more important than ever

Hundreds of shops will host free in store performances, mini festivals and DJ offs all over the country, a list of which can be found on the RSD website closer to the day itself.

Record Store Day Unsigned Returns

This year also marks one year since Record Store Day and our Official Manufacturing Partner Sound Performance launched its first Unsigned Competition. The competition was open to all artists from the unsigned community offering one act the opportunity to win 500 copies of their music pressed to vinyl and distributed to UK indies by Proper Music.

And we’re very excited to reveal that the winning artist, Barbudo, who were chosen by DIY Mag, Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Sister Ray and Sound Performance will have their debut album available to buy on the shelves of record shops from tomorrow (Friday 1st March).

Steve Courtnell owner of Portsmouth’s Pie & Vinyl described the album as “Dangerous and smooth. Hazy and sad. Barbudo are like watching Curtis Mayfield, Ariel Pink and Connan Mockasin get it on…”

The RSD Unsigned Competition is open once again. Artists can apply here: https://www.soundperformance.co.uk/rsdunsigned

UK Ambassador

Finally, if that all wasn’t exciting enough... Hold tight as we’ll soon be proudly announcing 2019’s official UK ambassador(s) to the world.

The Things We Make

Long out of print, now repressed on exclusive colour (Blue Vinyl). Natasha at Resident says “One of my all-time favourite records from one of my all-time favourite bands. My husband and I had our first dance to them in fact. Why they never reach a bigger audience is a constant mystery. This is an absolute classic. Not a weak track. We sold hundreds of copies of this off the deck as Sophie Michalitsianos (formerly a member of Sparklehorse) has a voice that’s out of this world & these compositions are mesmerising. I don’t recall this ever being available on vinyl. Those who fell in love first time round will love an excuse to rediscover this gem. If you’re a fan of Kathryn Joseph, Bjork or Agnes Obel, you need this in your life.”

Specials, The

As the recently reformed Specials performed on stage in the late afternoon sun, long-time fan Amy Winehouse stood watching in the wings before asking if she could join them for an impromptu sing along. They obliged and a beautiful thing, captured here happened. Please note royalties from this release of this track will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Phil from Sister Ray says “After seeing them at the 100 Club I was excited to hear the Specials collaborate with the activist Saffiyah Khan on the "10 Commandments”. It's a 7" single, artwork is classic Island red & white reggae style and it's backed with You're Wondering Now.”

No Silver Bird / Narcissus (Tunng Remix)

A long-time personal favourite of TVAM and something of a rare psych, curio ‘No Silver Bird’ was originally released by New Mexico underground act The Hooterville Trolley in 1968 , More recently ‘No Silver Bird’ has featured in the TVAM live sets and generated lots of interest and questions on Socials as to what is was and when it was available - the wait is over. The Tunng remix of ‘Narcissus’ came about via a remix-swap between the acts, this version is also previously unreleased /unheard until now. Natasha at Resident says “Watching the rise of Wigan-based producer Joe Oxley over the last few years, has been a real joy. When he finally released ‘Psychic Data’ last year (our No7 album of 2018), it was incredible to see more & more people being drawn to his crunchy electro-psych-goth-industrial-drone-shoegaze. Now he delivers a physical version of his take on the rare psych curio, ‘No Silver Bird’ (originally released by New Mexico underground act The Hooterville Trolley in 1968 & a TVAM live show favourite). He also hooks up with long-term shop faves Tunng, whose remix of ‘Narcissus’ gets their unique psych-folk treatment. Double whammy!”

Various - Ghost World OST

Ghost World

Shanachie Entertainment

First time released on vinyl (blue vinyl)--As he did with Crumb, director Terry Zwigoff has created a soundtrack as eclectic and riveting as his movie subjects. The sounds of early jazz and blues play a crucial role in the events of Ghost World, and the music heard here is some of the best ever recorded. Natasha at Resident says “One of my most watched films, the eclectic soundtrack is crucial to the success of Terry Zwigoff’s fabulously quirky indie film (starring Scarlett Johannson, Steve Buscemi & Thora Birch), based on Daniel Clowes cult comic book. Early jazz, blues, calypso, Bollywood, funk, surf & garage rock with a mix of rare 20s & 30s string band & blues tunes, make this a must have soundtrack from a must see movie.”

Covers album includes 10 cover versions including Africa, Take On Me, Paranoid, Mr Blue Sky & more……. Phil at Sister Ray says “Weezer have done a covers album. Not only that it's a guilty pleasures kind of thing but I don't feel at all guilty I want to hear them play Take On Me! I'm going to classify it as essential already. Its on my Christmas list!
