2. RSD after party @ Stage & Radio from 8PM (in association with Eastern Bloc Records / First Word / Soundwave Festival)

Mr Thing / Children of Zeus / Gilla / Bobafatt / Swindells

To tie in with Record Store Day 2017, and to celebrate the launch of the 9th Soundwave Festival in Croatia, the folks at Eastern Bloc have combined forces with First Word Records to throw down a mother of a party at Stage & Radio, Port Street, Manchester.
Passing through on behalf of First Word Records will be…

Since first touching turntables in 1987, Mr Thing has earned the title "your favourite DJ's favourite DJ" with good reason. Brought to notoriety touring the globe as a member of The Scratch Perverts and as a DMC battle champion, his skills on the wheels is matched with an astounding knowledge of music. A professional digger, he's released a series of acclaimed compilations for BBE, and produced an array of heavyweight tracks in his own right - the Record Store Day trilogy for First Word being a prime example; a project that saw him collaborate with Tall Black Guy, Eric Lau and Kidkanevil. He'll be dropping a collaborative LP with Micall Parknsun very soon. Despite his gentleman-like good nature, don't get it twisted; he will destroy everyone in his path on the ones and twos, dropping styles across the board, creating pure fire on dancefloors worldwide.

Manchester's own Hip Hop Soul duo, Konny Kon and Tyler Daley will be representing properly as always. For those that don't know, they've been shown love far and wide, from Pete Rock to Toddla T to Chase & Status, from Boiler Room to The Source to Radio 1. Tyler recently appeared on Goldie's latest album, whilst Konny has also been working with Dub Phizix. The Lenzman rub of their track 'Still Standing' was named "Best Remix" at the 2016 Drum & Bass Arena Awards. They've done shows in the past year with Soul II Soul, Slick Rick, Mos Def, Slum Village, Fatima, The Pharcyde and De La Soul. Kicking off the year with the anthem 'Crown' & holding down a monthly show on NTS, you can expect big things for Zeus's yout this year. Their blend of sweet rhymes and sour times exemplify British black music at it's best and brightest.

The founder / A&R of First Word Records; releasing music by the likes of Tall Black Guy, Kaidi Tatham, Eric Lau, Darkhouse Family, Myele Manzanza, Ross McHenry, Souleance and tons more. Gilla is a forthright selector in his own right. His 'Excursions' nights pack out Bussey Building in South London & Miranda in East London on the regular, and he hosts a monthly show of the same name on Balamii Radio, playing Hip Hop, Soul, Beats, Jazz, Broken and beyond. Prior to establishing First Word, he was the daddy of seminal club-nights such as New Bohemia and Funky Mule in Leeds. Also a long-time resident at Soundwave Festival in Croatia, Gilla's eclectic sets never disappoint.

DJing parties since the early '90s, BobaFatt's mixes, radio shows and club sets have seen him awarded acclaim over the years from BBC 1Xtra, Mixcloud and Fact Magazine. In addition to hosting a weekly show on London's only Hip Hop station, Itch FM, he recently appeared on BBC Radio 6 Music. He's provided work for Who Sampled, Death Waltz, Solid Steel, Rough Trade, i-D, Dazed & Confused, R&S, The Guardian and DJ Yoda. Also a Soundwave resident, he's played far and wide, from Glastonbury to Fabric, and his Main Squeeze night, co-run with DJ Mo Fingaz, is approaching it's tenth year. A long-time vinyl pusher to boot, he is one of the most varied DJs in the game.

They will be joined in the basement by:
JESTERMAN and TASTE THE DIFF'RENCE will be keeping things toasty in the upstairs bar.

This is sure to be a night of unadulterated dopeness. Tell a friend. Put on your dancing shoes. We'll see ya there.
£7 early bird
£8 adv
£10 on the door
Physical tickets now available from Eastern Bloc Records, Stevenson Square.

LP Cafe

Throughout the day we’ll be hosting a bill of some of our favourite bands on a big stage just outside the storefront, as well as live acoustic sets from some young talent on the shop floor.

The line-up for the outdoor stage is:

12pm - Callaine

A Guthrie-Govan-inspired sound, this talented guitarist relies on his instrument alone for his fusion of virtuoso sounds.

1pm - The Supersonic Porn Hounds

Newly borne out of friendships formed in store and with our very own barista on bass, the Porn Hounds have a surf-punk sound with a theatrically nonchalant performing style.

2pm - WACO

Big in London’s underground scene and releasing material on Watford label Venn Records, the fabulously patterned shirts of this four piece reflect their cosmic-punk sound.

3pm - Younghusband

Known to headline favourite indie East London venues, this hugely popular band will perform their form of hazy psychedelic shoe gaze.

4pm - Honey Lung

Hailing from Harrow, this energetic rock band are definitely going on to big things, having released their single ‘Sophomore' to some big radio play recently.

5pm - Stone Thieves

A fresh and heavy take on old school blues and Americana rock.

6pm - Roberto Capellino
A soulful indie-pop solo singer with a complex, looped and layered sound.

7pm - The Ghost Riders In The Sky

Playing their last ever show before disbanding at Watford’s venue The Flag on the 14th of April, the deceased Ghost Riders will rise from the grave to perform at our Record Store Day.

In between all this, local college West Herts will be putting on the best of their musical talent indoors with acts Alex White, All Aboard Gloria, Hyde and Love Buzz. Comedian Al Ronald will finish off the afternoon indoors by compering acts from 4.30pm onwards.

Throughout the day there will also be giveaways of unique merchandise - from Record Store Day & Fred Perry tote bags given free to the first 20 customers in the morning’s queue, to our own branded goodie bags.

Our regular menu of delicious food and drinks will be served, as well as a special seasonal rum cocktail courtesy of Kraken and a variety of beers from our favourite local brewery Pope’s Yard.

Piccadilly Records

As well as having a huge amount of limited edition RSD vinyl on offer, we'll also be hosting some very special instore activity to keep the crowds entertained throughout the big day.

DJ wise, we’ve assembled a crack team of musicians, label heads and vinyl experts to keep the queue moving and grooving with an eclectic mix of their favourite tunes. This year’s line-up stays close to our hearts with Mancunian jazz heroes GoGo Penguin joined by the debonair Pasta Paul and our resident techno fantasist Matt Ward! With a few special guests to be announced nearer the time you can rest assured that your ears will be in good hands.

For anyone struggling to stay awake after a long night of queueing, we’ve enlisted those fine folks at Workshop Coffee to provide a much needed caffeine boost via their exceptional selection of high grade roasts…

...and if you’re drinking coffee, you’ve just gotta be eating donuts! Thankfully, the master bakers at Blawd will provide. It’s a big thumbs up from Dale Cooper!

So expect queues, brews, wax and snacks as we celebrate Record Store Day the only way we know how.

Meanwhile, just round the Northern Quarter corner, our good friends at Common have only gone and thrown a party in our honour (well, it’s probably in honour of RSD, but we take all the glory we can get). As well as serving up a limited edition Piccadilly Records x Common x Cloudwater beer, there’ll be live performances from Ménage à Trois, Former Bullies and Wedding as well as some guest sets from our very own DJ crew. So make sure you load up on those coffees, it’s gonna be an all day affair.

Relevant Records

 Live music from the following:

12pm - Jess Morgan
She's releasing a hand made 7" on the day and will be performing live in-store this Thursday night too! A "cerebral storyteller" performing "unfancied folk-roots music, with heart, passion and gusto".
A great opener for the biggest day on any record collector's calendar!

1pm - Hayseed Dixie
As the pioneers of 'rockgrass', they're known for hillbillified covers of classic rock songs, and some great originals too (even Justin Timberlake is a recent fan!) Get ready for some foot-stompin' fun...

2pm - Broadway Danny Rose
This dark-edged alternative rock four-piece will be performing a special stripped down acoustic set for us - not to be missed!

3pm - The Baby Seals
Featuring former members of cafe-favourites The Centimes, this all grrrl trio make head-bobbing empower-pop songs. Always entertaining, and Matt Berry is even a celebrity fan!

4pm - Saltfen
They're appearing on R*E*P*E*A*T's split RSD 7" 'You Flexi Thing' and have a band description that's as honest as they come: "like The Strokes, but if they were from some next village in the middle of nowhere"!

5pm - SIAH
They also appear on R*E*P*E*A*T's split RSD 7" single, are all the way from Sugar Town (or "Bury St Edmunds" to you squares), and are bringing a post-punk / indie-rock sound with them. Rock on!

8:00am Holly Macve - acoustic

Holly has been kind enough to agree to come & play for us again to celebrate the official start of Record Store Day. We have been utterly mesmerised by her stunning debut, ‘Golden Eagle’ (released on local based, flawless label Bella Union), as have the press. “Macve displays an innate talent for exquisite songwriting and storytelling in a voice that is just jaw-dropping” – line of best fit. We can’t wait to have Holly with us for breakfast, kicking off the day in style.

8:45am Robb Johnson - acoustic

Another local musician & regular resident customer, Robb Johnson is a committed record store day supporter & we’re honoured to have him play for us on the day. The Daily Telegraph describes him as “one of Britain’s most challenging songwriters,” with good reason. Over the course of his 30-year career in folk music, Johnson has delved into the annals of political & military histories of the world. His performances are charged with an intense passion & energy so we’ll look forward to him waking us all up.

6:30pm Raffle & beers

It’s become tradition to wrap up the record store day festivities with a raffle & some drinks. When you join the RSD queue, we issue you with a raffle ticket number which means that we serve you in the order in which you arrived. Hang on to this ticket – it’s your free raffle entry & beer voucher. We are currently gathering together all sorts of fantastic prizes to give away including gig tickets, signed records, test pressings, t-shirts, vouchers, goody bags & much more. It’s always a pretty tasty prize pile. So, if you’re feeling lucky, pop back at 6.00pm with your free ticket & see if you can bag yourself a little something extra.

Other bits n bobs

The 1st 20 people in the queue will get a free Fred Perry tote bag thanks to their generosity.

as always, we will be handing out goody bags stuffed with promos, samplers, posters, t-shirts, stickers, badges & freebies from other local businesses that we would encourage you to visit while you’re in the area.

The good people at Jolliffes on Kensington Gardens (only a few doors down from us) will be opening even earlier than normal at 5.30am to serve you teas, coffees & snacks. Make the most of them. They make a great caffeine fix!

so, think that’s everything you need to know. if not, please fire your questions at us.

fingers crossed for warm, dry weather & you all successfully fulfilling your wishlists!

natasha & the residents (derry, james1, kurtis, james2, dan, ian, mark, helen, alex, javi & kevin). X
