Over 200 indie record stores announce live music events making it the UK’s biggest simultaneous music party

500 limited edition vinyl releases from Florence and the Machine, Primal Scream and David Bowie

BBC Music named official partner for first time

London, 6th April 2016:  Tens of thousands of music fans will take to their local independent record stores on Saturday 16th April to soak up the party atmosphere and raid the racks to find one of the 500 limited edition vinyl records released especially for the day. More than 250 record labels are releasing one-off vinyl products this year, from Florence and the Machine and David Bowie to Primal Scream and Interpol.

To coincide with the huge release schedule, the 230 participating shops are organising performances and in-store events to celebrate the day.  Here are just some of the highlights from each corner of the UK:

  •          Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl will host an outside music festival with Band of Skulls taking the headline spot
  •          Hannah Peel tours the South East Coast with her music box as she attempts to perform 9 live in-store performances in one day, starting in Brighton
  •          Rough Trade in East London welcome Irish singer- songwriter Glen Hansard, multi-instrumentalist Georgia and Benjamin John Power’s solo project Blanck Mass plus many more. And in Rough Trade Nottingham, the screaming eagle of soul, Charles Bradley, will be taking to the stage
  •          Container Records host an all-day DJ party at Pop Brixton (yes, it’s a record store in a shipping container)
  •          In Central London, a first ever vinyl playback of Ian Brown’s Solarized LP will take place in complete darkness at London’s Soho Hotel in conjunction with Sister Ray
  •          Manchester’s Piccadilly Records have DJ sets from Mary Anne Hobbs and Domino’s Higher Authorities. The RSD craft corner also returns to Manchester with David Bowie tribute. Face painters on hand to transform staff and punters alike into their favourite Bowie incarnation
  •          Inspiral Carpet’s frontman Tom Hingley will be performing an early acoustic set for the crowds at Vinyl Revival Manchester
  •          At Jumbo Records in Leeds, C Duncan and Allusondrugs will also be joining in the celebrations with in-store performances
  •          The smallest record store in the UK, VOD Music in Mold, Wales (which measures 67 sq ft) will be overflowing with limited edition vinyl releases and festivities.
  •          Glasgow’s Vox Box have an impressive 15 bands lined up to play in store including 2016 RSD artist Pinact and Emma Pollock

Who will be first in line in the RSD queues and where? Will they beat last year’s earliest queue-goers who joined the line outside Love Music in Glasgow at 2pm the day before?

ENDS

Record Store Day was conceived 9 years ago in the USA and is coordinated by the Entertainment Retailers Association in the UK. The day brings together hundreds of the UK’s independent record shops to celebrate their unique culture on the third Saturday in April. Exclusive vinyl is made available on the day and shops often have live music and in-store events to celebrate the event.

Vinyl releases have been a core part of Record Store Day since its launch and Record Store Day has in turn spearheaded the UK vinyl revival. In 2008 there were just over 75,000 vinyl albums sold in the UK. Propelled by Record Store Day sales reached 2.2 million units in 2015. In 2016 alone, LP sales are already up 67% on last year’s figures.

Record Store Day recently announced its partnership with BBC Music. Special programming will take place across the BBC’s radio networks, and in particular on BBC Radio 6 Music.
